There are no reported cases of chromium deficiency and toxicity but acute side effects of excess chromium from dietary supplements include dermatitis, weight loss, and hypoglycemia. Now, it is not considered an essential mineral.ĭietary supplements of chromium in the conjugate forms of picolinate, nicotinate, polynicotinate, chloride, and histidinate are generally taken to control blood sugar levels and treat metabolic and neurological diseases. Based on this potential effect, the Food and Nutrition Board (FNB) estimated the adequate intake of chromium to be 35 mcg (microgram) for adults. Chromium is said to participate in the metabolism of carbohydrates, lipids, and proteins, and promotes the metabolism of glucose by enhancing the actions of insulin, and is said to control the blood sugar in prediabetic and diabetic patients. On the other hand, dairy products and sugar-rich foods are low in chromium. Many natural foods such as fruits - grapes, oranges, bananas, vegetables such as lettuce, broccoli, green beans, meat, and poultry have chromium. Chromium is a trace element that is found in minute quantities in the body.
